Leading On - Changes to the Academies Financial Handbook 2021

This session will provide delegates with a technical update and a round-up of the changes to the Academies Financial Handbook (AFH) 2021.

Academy trusts must comply with the AFH as a condition of their funding agreement. It covers all types of academies. ie. single academy trusts, trusts with multiple academies, free schools, studio schools, university technical colleges, alternative provision and special academies.

The handbook is updated annually to reflect statutory and policy changes. It is applicable to those who have responsibility for governing, managing or auditing an academy trust.

The AFH provides the framework for implementing financial management and control, outlining the financial responsibilities, with details of elements that must be complied with and others that are a minimum level of good practice.

Hayley Dunn represents ASCL on the ESFA’s Academies Finance and Assurance Working Group that considers the changes each year to the AFH. Hayley will provide delegates with an overview of the changes to the latest version of the handbook, effective for the period 1 September 2021 to 31 August 2022.

Participants will:

  • identify the changes to the Academies Financial Handbook that come into effect from 1 September 2021 for academies
  • understand the differentiation between ‘musts’ and ‘should’
  • gain a greater understanding of the policy direction
There will also be the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with other attendees.

Suitable for trust leaders involved in complying with the requirements of the AFH, including academy accounting officers, chief financial officers, and clerks to the board.

To attend this webinar live, you will need to ensure you have access to a computer or device that meets the Zoom system requirements.

If you cannot attend live you will receive a copy of the recording, links to any resources discussed, and the opportunity to submit questions.
