The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued an
Education ebulletin about the safety of trees on school premises and playing fields. This is because of the tragic death of a child and the recent HSE prosecution of the local authority where the pupil died. The guidance highlights the importance of ensuring those responsible for school premises have effective systems to manage trees.
Competent persons should have relevant training, skills, experience and knowledge. The guidance recommends training courses about the identification of tree defects from providers such as the
Arboricultural Association who offer basic, intermediate and professional tree inspection training.
