New guidance on initial teacher training

May 2023

The Department for Education has published guidance encouraging initial teacher training (ITT) providers to forge partnerships with special schools.

The guidance aims to clarify the value of training in a specialist setting whether this is a special school, an alternative provision or a resource base. Increased opportunities to have a training placement in a special school can provide much needed recruitment to the sector.

It can also provide trainee teachers with the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in teaching pupils with special educational needs which benefits all schools.
