School Uniform Statutory Guidance

26 November 2021

On Friday 19 November, the DfE published new statutory guidance on the cost of school uniforms. The department has also updated its wider non-statutory advice on developing and implementing a school uniform policy.

The guidance clarifies the government’s expectation that schools think holistically about the cost of their school uniform and therefore covers a range of issues including branded items, supplier arrangements, and second-hand uniform. Governing boards should be compliant with much of this guidance by September 2022. To help explain some of the changes, please see this resource from the DfE’s Education Hub.

In response, ASCL issued this press release.
