ASCL NI comment on strategy for education excellence

11/03/2025
John Trueman, Director of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) Northern Ireland, responds to the launch of a new strategy for education excellence in Northern Ireland.

We welcome the Minister's launch of his strategy for education in Northern Ireland. This is much needed, and it is absolutely right that the 10-point plan has its roots in the Independent Review of Education. The areas of curriculum, assessment and qualifications have been neglected for too long and need to be revitalised to cater for the needs of contemporary society. School improvement and tackling disadvantage are also rightfully high on the list of priorities.

“We particularly welcome the promise of significant investment in teacher professional learning as this recognises the vital role played by teachers and leaders in our education system alongside the need to develop for the future.

“We look forward with anticipation as to how this strategy will be rolled out and indeed how it links to the outcome of Lucy Crehan's Review of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
