ASCL comment on government’s child poverty strategy

Pepe Di’Iasio, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, responds to the publication of the government’s child poverty strategy.

“School and college leaders witness the impact of child poverty on a daily basis, with pupils arriving hungry, poorly clothed, and from unsuitable housing. This is not just hugely damaging for their present wellbeing, but also for their attainment and therefore their future success and happiness. There is no more important mission for the government than to tackle the scourge of child poverty, and we are pleased to see them lay out their plan for how this is going to be achieved.

“Steps to improve access to childcare and improve the quality of housing, alongside previously announced measures such as the scrapping of two-child benefit limit, will make a real difference to the lives of children and families. However, we need to see more than just these policies in isolation. A cross-Whitehall response, backed by widespread investment, is required in order to make a tangible difference to the unacceptably high rate of child poverty.”
