Government must be more realistic about costs of breakfast clubs

Pepe Di’Iasio, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, comments on the announcement of the first 750 early adopter schools to offer the government’s new free breakfast clubs scheme.

Huge credit goes to the schools that have signed up for the early adopters scheme because their input is going to be vital in getting this policy right. Free breakfast clubs have great potential to play an important role in making sure every child starts the day with a nutritious meal and is ready to learn. However, we’re really worried that the funding is far too low – with a basic daily rate of just 60p per-pupil. We strongly urge the government to be more realistic about the costs involved before it attempts to roll out this policy nationally.”
