ASCL Literacy and Oracy Conference 2027

British Library, London

Embedding reading and literacy across the whole curriculum

A one-day conference exploring how reading, writing and oracy can become the beating heart of every school, college or trust, not through piling on more initiatives, but by embedding literacy meaningfully across the whole curriculum.

Tailored for school and college leaders and literacy leads across all phases and contexts, the day brings together expert speakers and practitioners to share research, strategy and real examples of successful literacy leadership. Alongside curriculum-wide literacy practice, the conference will look ahead to upcoming government policy, anticipated curriculum changes, the shape of the new Year 8 reading tests, and how to evidence literacy success at inspection.

Many settings are already doing a great deal to support reading and literacy, yet the question persists: how can we make it enjoyable for everyone, and what more can we do? The answer isn't always "more." Leaders need space to step back and dig deeper into what genuinely embeds literacy into a school or trust’s culture, rather than adding further strategies on top of an already full plate. With policy change on the horizon and new expectations for how literacy success is evidenced at inspection, leaders also need clarity now on what's coming, not after the fact.

By attending, you and your organisation will:

  • understand the real barriers to improving literacy across the school, college or trust, grounded in the most up-to-date research
  • access proven practice through shared case studies, examples and resources you can apply directly, whatever your context
  • know where to turn for ongoing support and materials to lead literacy confidently across the whole curriculum
  • evidence impact with confidence: knowing how to demonstrate success and prioritise the right next steps for improvement
