SMART Response: Managing lockdowns for senior leaders and Martyn's Law

SMART Response® Webinar Training (45-60 mins), an important session designed to support schools and senior leaders in preparing for emergencies through a levelled and proportionate approach to lockdown and critical incident management.

Developed by Matrix Academy Trust, SMART Response® is a trademarked, RoSPA-accredited system that goes beyond the traditional “on/off” lockdown model. It introduces clear roles, responsibilities, and communication protocols that keep staff and pupils calm, safe, and supported during incidents.

What this webinar provides:
  • Presenter Mark Wingett introduces the background and purpose of SMART Response®, including why it was created.
  • Shares lessons learned from the lived experience of managing a lockdown incident at Bloxwich Academy.
  • Walk through the training modules, including The Levelled Approach, Roles and Responsibilities, Lockdown and Aftermath, and Scenarios in Practice.
  • Highlights how SMART Response® aligns with Martyn’s Law and national safeguarding guidance.
  • Provides an overview of the free resources available, including activity cards, scenarios, and assessments.
By the end of the session, leaders will understand how SMART Response® can be embedded into their own setting to strengthen preparedness, reduce risk, and build confidence across the school community.

SMART Response® resources are provided free of charge to schools across the UK.
